Construction Begins on NE 31st Avenue Multi-Use Trail

NE 31st Avenue Multi-Use Trail

Construction is officially underway on the NE 31st Avenue Multi-Use Trail, an exciting new addition to Gainesville’s growing network of pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Funded through the Wild Spaces & Public Places program, this project will create a safer, more connected route for residents traveling between NE 15th Street and NE Waldo Road, while improving access to Unity Park and nearby neighborhoods.

As the surveying, engineering, and permitting consultant, eda partnered with the City of Gainesville to guide the project from initial site analysis through final design and permitting.

eda’s Scope of Work

Our team provided a full suite of surveying and civil engineering services, including:

  • Topographic survey identifying existing ground elevations, tree locations, and above-ground utilities

  • Utility location survey to map underground utilities and capture vertical measurements to overhead lines and guy wires along the proposed trail alignment

  • Preparation of construction plans, including paving, grading, and drainage design

  • Site plan permitting through the City of Gainesville and Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU)

  • Coordination with specialty consultants, including the bridge designer and geotechnical firm, for the proposed bridge within the project area

  • Collaboration with Public Works and GRU to address easements and utility conflicts

At eda consultants, we pride ourselves on being more than just engineers—we’re collaborators, navigators, and local experts. Our involvement with Archer Place began in the earliest planning stages, and since then, we’ve been responsible for the comprehensive civil engineering design of the site, as well as guiding the project through a complex regulatory permitting process with local and regional authorities.

Enhancing Connectivity and Safety

In addition to the new trail, the project includes intersection improvements along NE 31st Avenue to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity to Unity Park and the Waldo Road corridor. When complete, the trail will provide a comfortable, accessible route for both recreational users and commuters—strengthening Gainesville’s commitment to sustainable, multimodal transportation.
